AC/DC Drummer Colin Burgess Passes Away at 77 Cause is Not known
Colin Burgess, the inaugural drummer for the legendary heavy metal band AC/DC, has sadly passed away, as announced on the band’s official Facebook page. In a heartfelt statement posted on Friday night, AC/DC expressed their sorrow, remembering Burgess as their first drummer and a highly respected musician. The statement concluded with a tribute, “Happy memories, rock in peace Colin.” The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Burgess joined AC/DC in 1973, alongside founding members Angus and Malcolm Young, singer Dave Evans, and bassist Larry Van Kriedt. However, his time with the band was short-lived, following AC/DC’s breakthrough hit “Can I Sit Next to You Girl” and their debut performance at Chequers nightclub in Sydney, Australia.
Unfortunately, Burgess faced an early exit from the band in 1974, accused of being intoxicated on stage during a performance. Despite attempting to salvage his position by claiming his drink had been spiked, AC/DC opted to part ways with him. The drummer was subsequently replaced by various others, including the long-time member Phil Rudd. AC/DC even re-recorded their hit with Rudd on drums.
Before his stint with AC/DC, Burgess had an impactful career as the drummer for The Masters Apprentices, a popular Australian rock band from 1968 to 1972. In recognition of his contributions, Burgess and his former bandmates were inducted into Australia’s ARIA Hall Of Fame in 1988.
